Routines
Five steps to calmer school mornings
4 August 2026 · 4 min read · The Family Thrive Team
A simple morning routine that gets South African families out the door without shouting — and lets kids run it themselves.
Mornings set the tone for the whole day. When everyone is rushing, the smallest thing — a missing shoe, a lunchbox left on the counter — turns into a fight. The fix is almost never more nagging. It's a routine children can run without you.
1. Move decisions to the night before
Uniforms out, bags packed, lunchboxes prepped, water bottles filled. Every decision you make at 21:00 is one you don't have to make at 06:40.
2. Break the morning into visible steps
- Get dressed
- Make the bed
- Breakfast
- Brush teeth
- Shoes and bag at the door
For children under seven, use pictures rather than words. A child who can't read yet can still follow a row of pictures perfectly.
3. Give the routine to the child, not the parent
The moment a child owns the list, you stop being the alarm clock. Ticking off their own steps is genuinely satisfying — and it builds the independence you actually want by high school.
4. Keep the reward small and frequent
Points that build toward something they chose beat a big promise months away. Reset the points each month so every child gets a fresh start.
5. Protect the last five minutes
No screens, no new tasks, no surprise admin. Use that time for a hug and a sentence about the day ahead.
Technology should never replace parenting. It should empower it.
